Restaurantes de Canarias - Your Restaurant Guide to Canary Island

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Canary Islands are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, on the north-western coast of Africa. It is a group of seven major islands namely, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Gomera, Hierro, La Palma, along with six smaller islands namely Graciosa, Monta?a Clara, Alegranza, Roque del Oeste und Lobos. Interestingly enough, each of these islands has their own specialty , attraction, culture and of course cuisine.

This is Restaurantes de Canarias ? your restaurant guide to Canary Island. Well, the more you discuss it, the more interesting it gets. In the name of Restaurantes de Canarias, you can find everything. There is absolutely nothing that you can’t find in Canary Island. You can find several Restaurantes de Canarias, which serve 100% vegetarian food to say the least. Plus there are health food stores and organic food stores too! Besides the most exotic fruits Canary Islands can easily boast of some of the finest dining and eating experiences.

Let me share an interesting fact with the readers here, that one of the most discernible facets of this tourist spot is its restaurant business. The Restaurantes de Canarias or Canary Islands restaurants are exclusively designed to offer every comfort and convenience that each one of you can afford. With more than three million visitors visiting the Gran Canaria, the restaurants offer the chance to cherish the local flavor of this vibrant Canarian life to all its tourists.

Restaurantes de Canarias are famous for their cuisine and you can get a wide range of choices to opt for. The one thing that doesn’t need any and yet needs a mention is the incredible variety of fish and seafood that it offers to its visitors. The restaurants located all across the Canary Island specialize in the simple yet exotic and authentic seafood dishes. It will be no exaggeration to say that tourists would invariably always have the dishes available handy in every bar and restaurant.

If you are someone fond of good food (who isn’t!), just take a walk and you’d not be surprised to locate your type of Restaurantes de Canarias specializing in European cuisine, like the Las Palmas, Casa Rom?ntica, Aubergine, San Bartolome de Tirajana or in Andalusian food like El Boquer?n de Plata. And for a culinary adventure of Asia or Candombe, go, hit Tapasia.

Also remember to try out the relishing, traditional island dishes of Canary Island in Restaurantes de Canarias. For instance Canarian seafood at Tagor, or Casa Enrique, or El Jard?n Canario. Equally delicious are the fried fish, Canarian parboil, vegetable stews with watercress and shredded meat.

Also while you are taking a tour of restaurants, don’t you miss the mouth-watering wrinkly potatoes served with a special Canarian sauce called papas arrugadas. They are made from cheese, parboiled meat, smoked ham, Canarian olives, and marinated pork. Another dish originating from these islands is the enyesques, which is a Canarian word that refers to the tapas.

The Restaurantes de Canarias are also famous and known for the great atmosphere they offers to the tourists and visitors.

What’s on the Canary Islands that Will Make the Experience Unusual?

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The Canary Islands are a part of Spanish archipelago. The archipelago consists of seven major islands, one minor island, and several small islets of volcanic nature and are found in North Atlantic Ocean. The islands belong to Spain and although part of the European Union, avoid various European custom/duty charges. The Canaries enjoy hot sunny weather all year round, duty free prices and are home to some of the best beaches od Europe.

I have a set of friends who have not visited Canary Islands just once but good FOUR times! They say they can never have enough of it. The water is so clear you can see the fish swimming so clearly. The beaches there hardly need a mention. Then again the hot weather is a blessing. The rest au rants and eatery joints are quite reasonable. So all in all it’s the place to visit. People from around the world take a second and third tip to Canary Islands, so to know What’s on the Canary Islands that makes it such a favorite destination for the tourists, you will have to visit the place to believe it and of course then start recommending to friends and family. That’s the way it has always been with holidays, isn’t it?

If you are someone who loves those multifarious landscapes, sub-tropical rainforests, arid plains, pinewoods, mountain peaks, sand dunes, and remarkable flora, you will fall in love with Canary Islands. It will simply prove to be your type of vacation spot. The islands offer a fabulous array of picturesque sights, and its volcanic origins add to the beauty of the terrain. You can hire a Yatch to cruise along the coastline of any of this Islands to soak in the beauty of Canary Island.

When it comes to fruits, the region is blessed with special climate - microclimate, which allows the fruits and vegetables typical of Europe as well as the most exotic of tropical fruits are cultivated here. You can come across a large variety of mangoes, tomatoes, avocados and eggplants, which grow here. Lest we forget the most famous super-sweet Canarian banana. Their reputation has reached beyond the islands.

Lets get on with some interesting facts about the Canary Island.

The famous and charming Canary bird has got its name from the Canary Islands. The bird is from Azores, the Canary Islands, and Madeira. Then. the name of Canary Islands comes from the Latin “canariae insulae” which means “islands of dogs”, as Guanches used to keep a big and large breed of dogs.

Another interesting thing to know about Canary Island are the Dragon trees known as the Dracaena. They are common in the Canary Islands. They are called Dragon trees because the bark of these trees secretes red latex, which in earlier times believed was dragon blood.

Besides Dragon trees, you can also see milk trees or sweet tabaiba also known as Euphorbia balsamifera, which grow in Canary Islands and in North Africa. This 3 m tall which is approximately around 10 feet high shrub is from the spurge genus and like all spurges this one also secrets a milky latex, but, unlike other spurges, this milk is not supposed to be toxic. It is on the contrary sweet and harmless. Despite the name of the shrub, the milk does not have alimentary uses but is widely used under certain medical conditions. Chewing the tabaiba latex is supposed to strengthening the teeth and works as an antalgic treatment for acute dental pulpits. The milk secreted from this tree is also used against calluses, warts or moles, and has proved to be very effective.

These are very uncommon and unusual facts about Canary Island, which everyone may not be aware of. But if you are visiting Canary Island, you must make sure you have seen these trees and do some Canary bird watching!

The Quick & Dirty Guide to Surfing in Portugal

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Surfing or Wellenreiten as we call it in the German language is one of the oldest adventure sports known to man. Historians have dated surfing as early as 3000 years ago, but the modern form of the sport as we know it today was developed in Hawaii couple of centuries ago. The sport came to Portugal much later, but now it’s a major sport for amateur surfers because of friendly waves that help a beginner.

For surfing, it’s not just enough have a surfboard and a thrill-seeking heart, one must also be in a good location where the waves are high and good for surfing. Over the years many exciting Wellenreiten locations have been discovered worldwide, some of them cherished for the high waves and the dangers. Many of the famous spots like supertubos and the beaches of Praia de Areia Branca gather the most skilled surfers from around the world.

But Wellenreiten in Portugal is not just for the pros. Beginners can have surfing fun too and Portugal beaches have a lot to offer to them. A beginner needs friendly waves that you can ride even if you are newbie, good instructors and places where you can rent surfing gear. Portugal has it all.

The beaches of Portugal are long and sandy, and the water of the sea is clear and warm even when the weather is cooler. You can spend your time lounging around the beachside on a chair, sipping from a cocktail, and when you’re ready for another round of Wellenreiten fun, you can don your wet-suit, grab your surfboard and wade right in.

If you are seeking a surfing holiday, there are many organizations in Portugal that can offer you packaged holidays that include learning sessions, and Wellenreiten practice with pros. They will guide you through the nitty-gritties of surfing, and help you master tricks that you can show-off back home.

Remember that Wellenreiten is an adventure sport, so there’s a slight amount of risk involved as well. You should not go for surfing if you don’t know swimming. When the surfboard overturns (as it does often even for pros), you need to be an energetic swimmer to get back to safety. Luckily, the surfing schools of Portugal are professional, and will tell you about all the safety precautions you need to take before you can begin surfing.

For the first few times that you go out to surf, it will be a great idea to use a soft-longboard so that you will not injure yourself or one of the other surfers in the waves. Most surfing-spots in Portugal have all this gear available on rent, so you don’t need to bring your own gear or buy expensive stuff if all you want is a few days of Wellenreiten fun.

Having fun together promotes bonding, and strengthens relationships. So it will be a great idea to go for a Wellenreiten holiday with your friends and family, and there’s no better spot for that than Portugal. Contrary to what some people believe, Wellenreiten is not just for young college-goers. Even if you’re older, or younger, you can still have fun with surfing.

So if you’re looking for a sporty, fun holiday. Go for Wellenreiten. Go to Portugal.

Surfing For Beginners: How to Start

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Watching all those cool surfers showing off on the tv-screen, walking that ultra-cool surfer walk from the water to the beach, with the surfbroad held tightly under the arm makes anyone want to be a surfer. But how does one start? Join a Surfschule (surfing-school) of course. Anyone can learn surfing, or Surfen as it is called in German, age no-bar, sex no-bar. All one needs is an adventurous heart, and a good teacher.

Surfen is all about balance. It’s about keeping your center of gravity intact while the waves throw you around. You need a really good pair of legs and a keen mind to be a good surfer. On the surf-board, you’ll be battling the waves, fighting to keep your balance and still managing to have a huge amount of fun. Sounds tempting? Find a surfschule, and you can experience it.

Luckily surfing has become so popular of late, that there are surf-schools everywhere. Go to any good surfing spots, and you will find shops renting or selling surfen gear. A surfschule shouldn’t be far off. Many shops also arrange lessons on demand from local pros.

As a beginner you can’t graduate straight to the surfboard that professionals use. That surfboard called the shortboard is harder to maneuver and balance for beginners and surfen won’t be any fun for you on this board. Every surfschule has a longer longboard that is easier to balance on. The longboard is supported better by the waves, and even a beginner should be able to keep upright. The longboard is usually between 8 to 10 feet long.

The second thing that you need is a good wetsuit. Almost every Surfschule has wetsuits in a variety of sizes to fit different builds of people and you should be able to rent one. If you want to buy a wetsuit, make sure you but something that’s comfortable. Don’t ever buy a wet suit that’s too tight, because then surfen will be punishment not pleasure.

Most people prefer buying a wetsuit to renting one, because it’s a pretty personal clothing item. Also it’s cheaper than a surfboard, so you can easily afford one. Surfen is addictive, and once you get started, you’re going to come back again and again. You can buy your surging gear from any surfing store, but do ask your surfschule instructor about the type of suit you need.

If you’re wondering how long it takes to get started with surfing, the answer is a week. If you take daily lessons and work on surfen with dedication and seriousness, you’ll be surfing upright in a week’s time. Of course you must possess a certain degree of agility and good reflexes. The first few days of surfen will be hard, but your surfschule instructor will guide you, and once this gestation period is finished, you should find surfing much more easier.

One thing that you need to remember is that surfen exposes you to a lot of water, and if you have any kind of skin allergies or problems that are related to salt-water, you need to make sure surfing is safe for you. Also ask your surfschule if there’s any dangerous marine life like stingrays around, and avoid the areas that you’re asked to.

That said, here’s the last bit of advice. Take it easy in the beginning! Yes, don’t imagine that you’ll be able to surf big waves straight way and don’t be disappointed when you can’t. Surfen like any sport needs time to master.

A Perfect Holiday in Portugal

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

People take two kinds of holidays. One is a cultural discovery tour in which people travel to witness history or new culture. The second holiday is to enjoy the good times, near the beach lounging with fine food and weather. Portugal offers best of both, and it’s great idea to visit along with your friends and family, and rent a Ferienhaus (holiday-home) to enjoy the beauty of Portugal for an extended period.

Blessed with a good climate, beautiful stretches of beaches, and architectural marvels, Portugal is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It attracts over 10 million tourists every year. Many of the tourists have become so enamored with Portugal that they’ve built a Ferienhaus here, where they can holiday every year.

Portugal Ferienhaus can also be rented. There are many travel agents and organizations that will plan your trip and find a suitable holiday home for you in Portugal. You can rent the holiday-homes for any period starting from a week to a few months.

If you’re travelling to Portugal with family and friends, renting a Ferienhaus makes financial sense too, because a hotel stay can be more expensive. Living in a holiday-home will also give you the freedom to see Portugal on your own terms, and you’ll be able to make that odd cup of coffee when you need it yourself.

Holidays in Portugal can be filled with a lot of activity. If you’re interested in the history and culture of Europe, you can visit the museums, the forts and castles and discover how imperialistic Europe lived. If you’re are an avid golfer, you can enjoy the beautiful golf courses of Algarve and if you’re interested in surfing, you can learn surfing at some of the best beaches in Portugal. Of course, if you want to truly witness Portugal, you’ll have to stay on for a few days, so get a Ferienhaus.

These days planning your trip is very easy. You can access most of the information you need online. You can make reservations, communicate with people, look at sights and activities available, and learn how the weather is, all online. In fact you can search for your Ferienhaus online, and even pay for it too. That’s why taking a trip to Portugal is easier than ever. So if you’re planning to go there, get started.

Although the main language of Portugal is Portuguese, you’ll find a number of English speakers in the tourist spots thanks to fast-growing tourisms. If you go to a tourist hotspot like Algarve, you’ll even find English language newspapers. It’s because a number of families have made this region their permanent holiday spot and live and have their Ferienhaus here.

So don’t let language be a barrier on your trip to Portugal. If you’re not going to the smaller towns, and visiting only the major cities like Lisbon, and tourist spots like Algarve, you will find a multi-cultural society that plays hosts to all cultures. Find a Ferienhaus that suits your taste, and enjoy rich heritage, the finest food, and of course, one of the best beaches in Europe.

Come to Portugal for the Old-world Charm

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Portugal has a special place in the history of the world. There was a time when the world’s premier explorers and travelers were from Portugal. These explorers discovered new countries and continents during the course of their Reisen (Travel), and mapped the entire known world. Today people come to Portugal to experience this heritage, and have a beautiful time in their own holiday apartment, or Ferienwohnung as we call them in German.

For a long time the adventurous sailors of Portugal ruled the seven seas and controlled the trade among continents. Naturally the kingdom of Portugal was rich and powerful. These riches are reflected well in the architectural monuments of Portugal. There are over 150 castles and forts in the country. When you reisen to Portugal, make sure you visit some of these architectural wonders and see the historical glory of Portugal.

Portugal offers excellent facilities to travelers. It’s a perfect place to visit with the entire family. You can easily rent a Ferienwohnung in any major town of Portugal and live there for an extended period of time peacefully.

Portugal’s capital is the city of Lisbon. Once it was among the leading cities of Europe and the center of the Portuguese empire. It was ravaged in an earthquake in 1775, and although it never got back its former glory, it should still be the most important spot in your reisen. You can easily rent a Ferienwohnung in Lisbon and see the city over a few days. There are several castles in the city and one must see every one of them.

Even in these modern, busy times, Portugal retains some of that old-world charm. For instance, you will still find horse-driven carriages. They’re not meant for commute, but only for tourists. As a dweller of an urban city, you will enjoy the opportunity to reisen in these cars of the old world. You will find Ferienwohnung for rent at the seaside in many towns of Portugal. These cottages are located in the center of beautiful locales, and are a perfect place for a romantic time out from work.

If you’re a foodie, Portugal has the perfect cuisine too. The city of Lisbon is famous for its seafood. There’s hardly a traveler who isn’t captivated by the Bass and Cockrel cooked by Portuguese chefs. If you are in a Ferienwohnung, you can order from a take-out, or a delivery restaurant and enjoy excellent dinners in your home. That’s why Portugal figures prominently on any gastronomic Reisen itinerary.

Portugal also has one of the most wonderful beach stretches in Europe. Algarve’s beautiful beaches are a rage. The beaches of Praia Da Luz and Arma??o de Pera attract thousands of visitors each year. If you play golf then you will enjoy the beautiful golf courses of Algarve. Many golf-fans Reisen to Portugal just to enjoy golf here. You can easily find a Ferienwohnung here for rent. In fact this region is so popular that many European families have built a permanent holiday home here.

Try Londonelicious, London Restaurant Guide

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Earlier today I was introduced to a foodie blog that goes by the clever name of Londonelicious (London Delicious) I am not generally a fan of the usual London Restaurantguides which I find to be over-opinionated and obsessed with how many stars or forks a London Restaurant has to offer.

The other usual proviso for a good London Restaurant Review is how many times the chef has been on TV swearing and embarrassing his employees as well as any guests who dare to question his god like abilities with a carrot.

This blog takes a slightly different stance; it’s about eating out, good food and enjoying a pleasant meal. One shock is that the creator of this blog is not even a genuine dyed in the wool, East End girl. In fact she’s from the home of the Pizza, dubious hotdogs and tall buildings, New York!

Unlike some well known Internet London Restaurant Guide’s she does not accept free food or any advertising on the blog which makes for unbiased London Restaurant Review pages. Although she does admit to succumbing to the odd glass of free Champaign, well everyone has their price.
I enjoyed the blog mostly because of its total lack of pretense or one-upmanship, the contributors to this blog seem to be equally at home in the finest new West End ‘name dropping’ eatery or some unheard-of back-street pub in some dubious South London Street.

The reviews are truly eclectic, covering every possible type of eating house imaginable. The London Restaurant scene is given a completely different slant and an outlook that is very refreshing. Perhaps it’s the owner’s American background that allows her to view these London restaurant review posts from a completely different angle.

The titles of the posts leap out at you, enticing you to stay a while and browse the delights that her team have experienced on their travels around the best that London restaurant eating has to offer.
You could try looking up their review of the Leon chain and their ‘I Love England’ bap. The Linguini with chilli crab is checked out at The East Room in sunny Shoreditch. There’s an essential London Restaurant Guide for locals and tourists on finding something decent to eat in tourist trap that is Leicester square, not an easy task but they managed it.

That is not to say that the up-market cuisine is not included in their London restaurant guide, like I said these people just like good food and that includes some of the best restaurants that the city has to offer.

Its quirky and different and very readable, I am glad I was steered towards Londonelicious, it is now bookmarked and I will be a regular visitor whether I am looking for the best London restaurant or a great pub Sunday lunch.

Ephesus, near Kusadasi Turkey is considered as one of the foremost and most rich external museums in, because of course, aside from the site being out in the open, Ephesus provides the experience of history and the arts and architecture like no other site can. One proof of this is that one may find temples of the Roman goddesses and the leader of Rome in the Ephesus, something many of us would only be able to look at in encyclopedias. But going to the Ephesus means going face to face, hand to hand, with these temples, and one may finally touch the solidity and realness of the temples themselves. Other interesting structures in the Ephesus include also the Odeion, which according to historical world records, was utilized during the Roman times as a theater for public performances and public speeches of senators and other such personages from the Senate at that time in history. Another interesting historical locus in this particular space in the Ephesus would be the Prytaneion which, in the final determination and reconstruction in ancient times was finally finished as a public bath for citizens and public officials. There would be little to hinder you from enjoying the sights and sounds.
